After serious injuries one of the first questions that athletes what to know the answer to is, "When will I be able to start running, practicing, or playing again. Most of the time, an athletes return to sport is dependent on the affected tissue, the complexity of the injury or surgery, and the athlete's condition before the injury. If there are little external factors an athlete will meet all requirements and return to sport at the anticpated length of healing process. Once a tissue is structurally healed enough to sustain stress from running there are still some guidelines an athlete must meet before being able to be cleared to run. For most athletes, once they are aware of these goals they have an objective way to determine when they can return, a way to gauge how far/ close they are to returning, and extra incentive to buy into rehab.
