There is some correlation between having pain and a lack of muscle flexibility. The given joint will not be able to move through a full range of motion because the muscle is too tight often resulting in stiffness and pain. However, lack of flexibility is not always the cause of pain. Some female athletes still experience pain despite being very flexible. For those female athletes that have always been flexible but continue to experience pain in any joint, especially the lower back, the cure may be very simple... the joint needs more stability. While the athlete is able to fully move the joint, there is not adequate strength to support the joint. Ultimately this leads to the bones, cartilage, and other structural tissues having to absorb some of the stress that the muscles should; often resulting in an injury.
